TITLE: “Smokey and the Bandit”


EPISODE SYNOPSIS: A serial killer from Dexter’s past makes a ocking reappearance; Debra has problems settling into her new job; and Travis and Gellar contemplate their next move.


Dexter’s kill in last night’s episode was a last-minute addition to his hit-list. Based on one of the videos we have to ow you from next Sunday’s episode, his next target could be soone he’s been interested in for quite so ti now. “Once Upon a Ti” is just as much Deb’s episode as it is Dexter’s. The problem is, both her and her brother have very little in the way of tension going on this week. Yes, Dexter has another kill, but it isn’t really a challenge. Likewise, Deb has to deal with Quinn purposing and the job offer of lieutenant. but e’s really already made the decisions. Like the Orle said, now e has to understand why. Dexter’s target this week, Brother Sam, was tually a refreing presence on the ow. The ft he was innocent and full of conviction made him all the more pelling. If the writers had decided to make him evil, I feel as though it would have been a step in the wrong direction. For Dexter to explore his spirituality, he needs so kind of roll model. In the event Brother Sam does e bk, he seems like a religious individual cut from the sa cloth as Dexter. I udder to think Dexter’s dark passenger would be distinguied by faith, but the possibility of it might prompt his continued investigation of religion. The problem with the episode is that once Brother Sam was cleared, Dexter didn’t have much to do. The scene in the kill room was very brief because there was very little point.


In ft, I found it quite strange that Dexter didn’t use is usual thod, instead slitting the poor guy’s throat. Really, the best mont of the episode ca when Dexter let himself loose against Sam’s attkers, beating so jerk down with a baseball bat. It was nice to see Dexter unlea the animal within once and a while to remind the audience who he really is. Dexter’s other plotline involving Harrison had so nice monts, but felt a little strange. It was nice to see a two year old piece together Dexter’s life (“daddy’s box!”), but at the sa ti it’s strange Dexter gave him so many pieces to work with. It makes sense Harrison would see Dexter’s trophy case, but Dexter really ouldn’t have been telling him G-rated stories about his kills. It makes for a cute scene, but when Dexter is repeatedly narrating about how he wants to separate his dark passenger from his son. it seems very hypocritical. What if Harrison starts telling those stories to Deb? It just seems sloppy.


As for Quinn’s proposal, Deb had believable reasons (not to ntion a ton of baggage) for not taking it. Quinn is reckless, but in his heart of hearts he’s not a bad guy. Telling Deb to get out was aggressive, but you could see how he felt in the heat of the mont. The real question is how Quinn will ultimately ret to her rejection and how much he’ll bla Dexter. It would be rather refreing if he didn’t fixate on Dexter, but we’ll see in ti. Overall, the episode had so nice monts, but otherwise felt sowhat dull. The subplot of Masuka and his intern led to so great monts (and great visuals) that will no doubt serve as so great ic relief as the plotline develops.


As for Colin Hanks and Edward Jas Olmos. they’re still in the bkground and therefore hard to judge. I would keep an eye on Edward Jas Olmos, though. he hasn’t really been very hands on. I’m not playing the Tyler Durden card quite yet, but it’s worth ntioning. “Once Upon a Ti” didn’t do anything particularly well, but it didn’t do anything wrong either. It was a bridge episode, so we can only hold the pay off is ing later. There were many monts to put this one above average television (mostly centered around Brother Sam), so I’ll go with.
