Disclaimer:
First and foremost, this post will reflect my own, personal idealism. As such, it is not to be taken as a collective view of a larger body of people, nor anyone for that matter, save for myself. It is an opinion-piece, and is not meant to instill any righteous indignation in some gun-totating redneck mental degenerate who may be, quite literally, twitching for fodder to fuel their insanity. This is simply my own view on our world as a whole, from the outward view of myself, which is enwrapped in many quiet, clandestine, shadowy elements of society.
It is a basic discussion starter, on my views of the “conspiracy nuts” who, for all their varied distinctions, walks of life, and basic differences, are all saying the same thing. This is something which cannot, and should not, be ignored. I will extrapolate on topics which, for the most part, are controversial at best, and perhaps heretical at worst.
In truth, being heretical is what our world needs now, perhaps more than ever before. That all being said, allow me to get on with my writing…

We live in a world that is not new. To be sure, it is new to babies, who are born each second of the day, but the vagaries and the currents to this river we call “life” are not new. Our planet is several billion years old, which is debated by some, but has been proven by methods defined as “logical”. Nonetheless, it is a common misconception by a random person you see crossing the pedwalk that events in our current timeline are somehow “new” or “fantastical”, or, for a better word, “new age”. This is an easily sprung logical fallacy trap. Men do with what they have at hand. They perceive their lives through a pair of spectacles that were placed onto their psyche from birth to the current day.
A man will spread apart his curtains, and he will look out upon, in this example, his suburban domain. He will see the sun, setting against a backwash of freshly mown lawns, idyllic homes, spaced out in a clear pattern of success and peace. He will see a dove sitting upon a treelimb, doing its mindless things, as it has for eons.
This is, of course, only a one-sided glimpse of one man’s existence. In this case, Suburban America. Were you to describe the windowed view of another man, across the sea, the imagery might suggest something akin to opposites, poles of the same reality, but vastly divergent in their brushstrokes upon the besotted eyeballs of both men. Perception is like that. One person see’s for himself a paradise that his years of toil and frustration have wrought, his labors bearing fruit. The other see’s a lifetime wasted on dashed hopes. As it was said in a pop culture film: “You’re going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.”
Indeed. How you see the world around you, how you CHOOSE to see the world around you, is what shapes, molds, and ultimately defines your own personal reality. Yes, gravity affects us all, as do fevers, and aging, and emotions, but how you experience all of these vast things is affected, and effected, 100% by how you choose to see them, each in kind.
The problems that plague the dreams of those two hypothetical human beings, however, are more profoundly coming to light, with each day that passes in this “age of reason and high technological innovation”. When aforementioned men open their minds during sleep each night, they are each in turn haunted by an inner feeling that the world around him is some kind of mysterious veil.
Comments like the last sentence in the paragraph above bring jokes and remarks about pop culture items such as The Matrix, and their ilk. The irony is, reality is often-times far more disconcerting and, in fact, more distorted than the fiction of men. Sometimes, art is not imitating life, but is in fact, being imitated by life.
Not to sound like a drug abuser, the point I am making is that, when you strip away the political and pop culture references from such stories, you are left with nothing but a skeletal, open window of thought on the current state of affairs in our societies, be them Baghdad, or Nebraska.
And therein lies the paradox of what it means to be “here” in 2006. None of you, nor myself, can claim with sanity, to be immune. The maelstrom of happinesses, sorrows, and fears and strengths that surround you and myself both, are not sentient creatures with a conscience. They do not care for our aversion, our outrage, our worry, nor our denial. Some men have said that denial is itself a sentient entity, that feeds itself. Literary canon aside, it is everywhere you look, and indeed, seems to be almost a breathing, self propogating organism, much like a virus is the same.
What is denial? Where does it come from? Being that I am no expert in the field of human behavior, I can only speculate with what I know for certain from my own life. Denial, in my opinion, is a catchall, a safety net, for when everything in our lives, every facet of who we are as human beings, is threatened. What is that threat? I do not honestly believe it is any one person, or secret coven of old people hiding in shadowed castle catacombs, plotting the destruction of freedom. In all honesty, I believe denial is an infection of the human race as a whole, and it is being used to not control us, but lead us down the path of extinction. I firmly believe, with all of my heart and soul, that it will be our undoing.
Which leads me to the topic of this essay, and my many hours spent thinking about it and how to present my ideas. I am a long winded person, and as such, tend to go on longer than some can tolerate, but I believe that those who wish to think, whether or not they agree with me, will find my ideas to be at least educational.
Some of you will enjoy this read, and perhaps walk away with a sense of being smaller than we often-times believe we are. Some of you will dismiss me out of hand as a crank, or a roving madman who has far too much time on his hands. Either way, as I have said many places online and offline, all my life, everything you read and see affects you, whether you are conscious of that or not. You are changed. Some part of you has been transplanted someplace else. I pray for your betterment in that location.
Conspiracy theories abound in modern day America. I will focus on my own American experience, as my international experiences with such phenomena are token, at best. You are what you read and see at home, as some say.
People who present ideas that do not go with the common layman’s view outside his window have been called heretics, charlatans, madmen, cultists, and the like, since the beginning of our race. It matters not if man came from a primate, or a divine fingertip, men will always lash out and rail against any of his brothers who defy the status quo. Therein lies the threat I was referring to earlier, and thus, the virulent denial which, seemingly an unstoppable force of nature in itself, takes over.
Having stated those things, allow me to ask you a few questions for you to think about on your own, perhaps then relating to a lover, friend, or loved one, then allow me to exlpain my reasoning behind them:
1 - Who are you?
2 - Why are you certain of that?
3 - When you ask these same questions of other people, what are their responses, and, mathematically, how far different are their responses?
4 - Are you shocked by the results of this experience?
5 - How do you feel knowing the answers, from all sides?
The reason, friends, that I ask such questions is not to test your intellect, or make you feel like my personal lab rat, but rather to show you the power of “perception”. It is something that you cannot bottle, sell or give. It is tasteless, sightless, and unable to be stopped. You simply cannot outrun your own perceptions, as neither can any of us, nor death, nor tomorrow. Perception then, is where the problems with conspiracies and the people who push them come from: Mass, unadulterated misperception. Again, this is fed by denial.
No matter how hokey a conspiracy “nut” appears, and no matter how demented and sad they may appear on the surface, it is a foolish person who ordains that person “completely full of it” without so much as a thought on the topic at hand. Conspiracies are a very real aspect of human society, be they cirminal interprises such as pimping, or war-mongering, financially obsessed people who have only one goal in mind: themselves.
Selfishness does not have a favorite food to eat. It does not pick and choose a person to grip onto like a leech simply by some pre-ordained taste. Everyone who walks this earth has been, and will be again, a meal for selfishness. It is something most kind-hearted people work against in their lives but which, without end in sight, will not always stave off.
This manifests itself in many ways, be them hogging the mashed potatoes at dinner, or raping a woman at knifepoint. The latter is an extreme example, but the world is often laced with far worse examples of human greed and lust for “self”. It is my firm belief that selfishness will always be at the root of any conspiracy, no matter how lofty, ambitious, or simply morally despicable it may be at the end of its chain of events. People want what they want, and they want it at any cost. Thus comes the greed, and so on and so forth.
What comes after the so on and the so forth is not a metaphor from some poet in need of his medication (me) but is in reality, you walking out your front door, and being bombarded from all sides. Take a walk on a quiet, unbusy evening. Look about as you go, aimlessly taking in the sights, the sounds, the air you breathe. What is it you see?
“Jesus loves you” “Real Estate Broker X” “Tattoo”
Everyone has something to sell. It can be as simple as a product, or their time to influence your soul, or your pleasure, or your education. Everywhere you gaze, your time and money and emotions are being steered, like a herd of Bison. That is not my opinion, but reality. The metaphor of Bison could, in theory, offend some, but I am not here to make friends. I am here to strip away a small strip of the electrical tape, so to speak, that is covering the vast majority of eyeballs in my homeland. People are asleep.
That is nothing that has not been said a million plus times previously, nor is it the best expression of that idealism, but nonetheless, it is what it is: reality laid bare. People live in a cacoon of denial of what is going on beneath the surface of their lives. It is a shroud which, through their own guilty accomlice status, is perpetuated day in and day out. This is not an error in some divine system, nor is this some fluke of our modern day. It is by design.
That being said, some people try to wake from their “slumber”. They read, they watch footage, they track down leads and they push into realms that others are, in a word, terrified to set foot in. These people, although not all of them fully sane, nor credible, have one thing in common: They believe a great lie is being painted over their closed eyeballs.
Enter the conspiracy theorists. Some of them come from Academic excellence backgrounds, fields whereby unless you are part of that small contingent of thinkers, you are simply unqualified to embrace nor dismiss anything they say without looking like a complete idiot. Some of these people come from literally nothing, perhaps trailer houses in some stereotypical American backwater, where by chance and circumstance, their apparent intellect has been allowed to flourish despite the rough lives they have lead.
In both cases, both sides of these realities are not ALL wrong. At some point, there is a saturation point that is maintained, indeed overtake, by the sheer volume of lies, truths, and halves of both, that is laid open and ready to be taken in. Or, in many cases, to be annihilated with that proverbial “that’s impossible” so many seemingly rational people fling at anything that makes their shrink wrapped worldview be opened to the air outside. Ergo, the denial I mentioned earlier.
No, friends, everyone who claims one person or group cannot, in the realm of possibility, be responsible for something as immense as a forced, secret regime change, cannot all be insane, or revenge-motivated, or on drugs. Somewhere, someway, the truth is being spoken, and the implications for this truth will redefine the nature of our race in the centuries that lie before us, however long they may be in coming.
We ARE at war with terror. Terror is fed to us throughout the spectrum of media. Everytime you turn on a radio, or read an article in your local newspaper, you are fed the inescapable reality that terror is a part of your life. Whether or not you choose to face it, and how and when you choose to, are irrelevant. If you don’t see something before your eyes, it is so much more palatable to say it isn’t there. For my purposes here, I am talking about selfish people. These are people who are not mired by the moral dilemma of whether or not beating a child is right or wrong. These are not people who have your last days, perhaps in a quiet bed in some nursing home, in their minds. These are not people who will lay awake at night, weeping for the loss of their “humanity” as they orchestrate their various machinations which, taken as a whole, define what humans know as evil. These people have one ambition: Owning you.
Every action you take in our modern society has a consequence. This has always been truth. You tell a lie, it WILL come out, soon, or long after you are ashes and thought forgotten. It is the way of the universe. Mystical babble aside, this is most uncomfortable to those with the biggest lies espoused from their mouths. That being said, the problem with consequences is that, more than at any other time in our history as a species, at current levels, are smaller it seems to me. You rape someone, they put you on trial, but they convict you wrongly, and the consequence is your life is destoryed. The real criminal is free to rape again. This is but one example. Open a newspaper and consequences are all around your eyeballs. People are “getting away with it” more than any time in recorded history.
Getting away with what? Name your cliche’. Arms deals. Imperialistic Expansion. Rape. Money. Religious Intolerance. Theft. Power Grabs.
I am not referring to any one specific conspiracy that I am leaning towards. There are too many to fill even a shelf of books for debate, but, in the end, whether or not people WANT to see them, these things are, nonetheless, controlling their lives. One has only to reason, and in that resoning a nightmare of what really is out there takes form, and you are not so big and all encompassing as you were taught to believe. Dominion over the beasts of the earth has little value when you are but one of those beasts to another human or group of humans.
And that leads me to the main point of my essay: The overarching problem with conspiracy theory, and the people who push it like crack-cocaine to anyone who will listen:
WE ARE THE CONSPIRACY.
People like to talk a lot of trash about President Bush (I am guilty), or the “Military Industrial Comlpex”. They speak out as if experts in the fields that support their version of reality, their “perception” of reality, and try to convince anyone who is out there that someone or a group of their peers, are masterminding some horrid, evil, word-domination scheme. To these people I offer a logic-bomb:
You are feeding the sharks your chum (yourselves).
What is the point to what I just said? Endless debate, rather than action, has become genetically templated in everyday life. For an example, you meet your cousin at the Burger King to perhaps talk about grandpa and his illness. Invariably the conversation will veer to the current political climate, or the war, or some controversial medical headline that has certain demographics up in arms. When this occurs, passions sometimes flare, anger is fomented, and maybe, just maybe, a little self-actualization peeks out from the masks we wear when we rise to meet the day.
Nonetheless, that is all, in total honesty, I believe people are accomplishing: Talk. So many people have the intellect, the heart, the passion, and the courage to affect changes that would be seen as ideal to all but the most selfish of humanity, and yet, at the end of the debate on “Why Brittany Spears Is Bad For Pop Culture” or “Who Will Angelina Sleep With Tuesday”, all come down to a lot of passionless, heartless, FEAR. A lack of will has grasped humanity as a whole.
There are many things in my country that are seen worldwide as “wrong” or “decayed”. Whatever your stance is on these things, it is a sad, undeniable (though many will try) fact, that nothing is being done because there is no concerted effort to do so. You cannot walk around your life here in the United States and not see a nation on the brink of annihilation, be that financial, militaristic, or just plain old social-scientific. Our nation is in pain, she is hurting, and we are “discussing it in a committee” in every grease & spoon from here to Seattle. People WANT things to change, but they are so hardwired to accept anything that comes to their mouth, they no longer bother to even chew their food. Metaphor aside, I am saying that the “conspiracy” some scream about on a shoebox on some random street corner in America, is not them. It is you. It is me.
We have failed ourselves, and therein lies a tragedy only Shakespeare himself could rightly imagine with his quill. I am as guilt of inaction as the next person, but I am learning to take steps. I no longer hold in half of the things I used to hold in. I speak on what I think, and I try with all my heart to accept things are “perhaps” until I am educated otherwise. It is a long, arduous roadtrip of self-discovery, but, in the end, I am convinced that my life will have had more meaning for me, and those I leave behind, if the push to learn the truth keeps burning in my heart.
In closing, the world you call “high tech” and/or filled with “new and terrible things” is not knew. Your perception that the world is on a system that will right itself without your intervention is not new. Your belief that all governments lie to their people because they can will not save you. Your hope that all people are basically good at heart will not keep the execution button unpressed.
The only person who can change that which has gone wrong, on any level, is you, and yours. It is up to you, and not the blogs, not the preachers, not the activists. Activism is not a noun, it is a verb.
Thank you…
