Came across this today. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060817/wl ... 0817132049.

"The artefact, symbolising a sea god and made from an embossed sheet of gold, depicts a mythical octopus with a stylised human head, cat-like features and eight tentacles."

Sound familiar? It should.

if the url doesn't work for you, delete the period at the end.

cephalopod totems pop up all over the pacific rim.. it makes you wonder just how influential those proto-polynesians were. we know that the central and south american civilizations already revered the big cat, so maybe a kind of god splicing happened at some point

Look up Fe'e, the Polynesian god of thunder. He was a big octopus who lived in a city which sunk under the sea.

If I was Polynesian and I read Lovecraft, I would be shitting myself constantly with dread of when the stars align.

Polynesians definatly have the coolest mythology. Theres so many diffrent gods that one or two probably resemble Cthulhu.

Remember, Lovecraft was self-taught, and that he certainly had an interest in Polynesia, the mysterious Ponape culture seems to have caught his attention.
Lovecraft was a respected amateur astronomer and a keen amateur scientist-he would have known how to use library resources to delve into subjects he found interesting.
Dreams often bring our knowledge to order, and Lovecraft was inspired by dreams.
There are such things.
