As the clock ticks towards the start of CFL free agency on Feb 15, it appears more and more likely that Korey Banks time with the B. Aqib Talib Womens Jersey .C. Lions has come to an end. Banks told TSN on Jan 2 that he had no interest in playing out the option year of his contract with the Lions in 2014, and he again made that clear in a conversation with Lions GM Wally Buono last week. Buono indicated to TSN on Tuesday that he has no intention of renegotiating Banks contract. Assuming hes convinced that Banks will not report to training camp under his current deal, that would leave him with two options: trading or releasing the seven-time all-star, something Banks hopes happens soon. "Im not sure why this is taking so long," Banks told TSN. "Im a veteran and Ive given my heart and soul to this team for eight years. If they dont want me to be a part of it, just release me and let me move on." From Buonos perspective, it is not unreasonable to expect a player to play out his option year, regardless of their age. "We had five players play out their option this past year and more than 100 players in the league did also," said Buono. "Korey is under contract and we would like him to come in and compete for a job just like everyone else. Whats wrong with that?" Banks, meanwhile, bristles at the notion. "Compete? All Ive ever done is compete. Ill tell you right now, there is no way they are going to bring anyone in to take my spot. Im in great shape and Im going to play at least one or two more years. I just want to go where Im wanted and in a way that allows me to look after my family." Buono does concede that there are some similar dynamics to this situation and the one he went through last year with Geroy Simon, another veteran player that ultimately moved on. He hopes to have the situation resolved by Feb 15, but given Banks is still under contract, Buono doesnt believe he is under any obligation to make a decision by then. "I would like to do whats best for Korey and whats best for the club, but sometimes that is in conflict," said Buono. As for the Lions who will become free agents on Feb 15, Buono expects defensive linemen Keron Williams to go to free agency. "He needs to see what his value is on the open market and so do we," added Buono. He is open to bringing Williams back for 2014, but also wants to free up some salary cap space before Feb 15 so he can aggressively pursue non-import free agents. The Lions have also tendered contract offers to WR Nick Moore, DB Josh Bell and OL Steve Myddelton. Peyton Manning Broncos Jersey . The worst penalty kill in the NHL yielded two more goals as the Leafs dropped a 3-2 decision to the Jets on New Years Eve, to conclude a winless three-game road trip. Frustration has bubbled beyond the boiling point for the ever-struggling penalty-kill. "How long has it [expletive] been?" David Steckel said incredulously after the game. "Its insanity is what it is." "Its been the story all year," Luke Schenn added. "The penalty kill is the reason why we dug ourselves in this hole right now…Weve been working on it, but just nothings clicking right now so its frustrating. Every player in the locker room is frustrated with it. Its biting us every night." The Leafs have allowed a league-worst 41 powerplay goals, exactly 30 more than the top-ranked New Jersey Devils. More than a handful of losses have fallen on the shoulders of the trembling unit (see below). "Its obviously tough to point the finger at right now," Schenn said of necessary improvements. "Weve been working on it for a bit and going over it non-stop; meeting upon meeting and practicing it. Hopefully somethings got to give here and we can get better and get on a bit of a streak with it." December was a considerably gloomy month for the Leafs and their penalty-kill; nine losses in 13 games (4-6-3) and a mind-boggling efficiency of 64% (33-52) killing penalties. Five Points On The Penalty Kill 1. Whats become so aggravating for members of the penalty kill is a constant repetition of mistakes. Twice on Saturday, Jet point-shots deflected off Leaf bodies before either going in the net directly or off an additional stick past James Reimer. "We kicked two pucks in our own net," Ron Wilson said. "One went off Lukes knee when he shouldve been getting out of the way and not screening the goalie or trying to block that one. Jake essentially did the same thing; he was trying to box out and then he saw the puck coming so he reflex stuck his foot out there and he deflected it between [Reimers] legs." "We should know better," Wilson added. "We have some guys making the same mistakes. The screening the goalie [for example]…Were not worrying about their screeners. Were screening the goalie better than the opposition does." 2. Boosting the sagging mind-set of a struggling unit has been a considerable challenge. The struggles have become so mentally engrained that an impending sense of doom often accompanies the Leaf penalty kill onto the ice. "I think weve got to start going out there with the mentality of having no fear because its certainly not working the way its going," Steckel said. "I think we need to start from scratch basically and have the mentality Listen, were going to go out there and do what we do and if they beat us with three or four great passes then good for them, but we cant keep doing the mentality and confidence that we have. "Its redundant,, all the time. Louis Vasquez Womens Jersey. Like when its going to end?" 3. General hockey sense has eroded with the decline in confidence. More thinking has led to less reacting. "Once you get confidence with your PK you maybe dont analyze it as much," Keith Aulie told the Leaf Report earlier this week. "You just relax a little bit and just play and your hockey sense takes over. But right now were analyzing it a lot and maybe doing some things that we just normally wouldnt do as a hockey player." "Thats exactly it," Steckel concurred. "You can only talk about where to be so much. Everyone plays the 1-3-1 [system] pretty much so its not like powerplays are changing where we need to discuss about where everyones going to be at the same time. I think its just more so reacting, thats the bottom line." 4. Communication could also probably stand to improve. Its an asset generally lacking on young teams, but a real focal point of the coaching staff; Dion Phaneuf is usually the one constant in terms of chatter on the ice. 5. Of the Leafs nine losses this month, at least five tie themselves almost directly to the penalty kill and its inability to get the job done.
