it just doesn't look like other cthulhu pictures you've seen before. that's because most illustrators can't get past the simplistic 'octopus-headed bat-winged gargoyle' standard, based on the famous statuette from hpl's story. but read the part where the sailors meet up with cthulhu, and you'll see the language is a lot less definite. the above is probably my favorite rendition of cthulhu so far, followed closely by this one

I don't know. "The awful squid-head with writhing feelers" seems pretty definite to me. The above pic, while awesome, looks less like a "green, sticky spawn of the stars" and more like a bristling, chitinous spawn of the stars.

i choose not to take 'squid head' so literally. maybe i've gone beyond what hpl imagined cthulhu to be.. maybe i give him too much credit. i just think there was plenty of opportunity to describe cthulhu's form, and all he did was give impressions and analogies. you don't have to look at it through such tired eyes, you know. this is supposed to be about provoking the reader's imagination...
see, that head doesn't look like it's rigid to me, like the queen alien from aliens.. instead, it looks like it could flex and curl around, maybe take a different shape. that's using my imaginaysheeown
