CD review: another ambient Lovecraft-based album...

Post by Lagwolf »

Poisoned Dreams
The Unquiet Void
(Middle Pillar)

Yet another ambiant CD based on the works of HP Lovecraft. There seems to be a real glut of Cthulhu-inspired music at the moment. Guess the Great Old One is stiring again and affecting musician's minds. He needs to try harder. This is an all instrumental album that I assume was done to accompany the reading (and for some of us writing) of mythos tales. For me, at least, it does not really do the trick. Its just vaguely creepy background music that adds nothing to either the reading of a tale nor the writing of one. In fact, to be honest this CD falls flat. Jason Wallach is obviously a talented musician, but this stuff is boring. I suspect many of the budding Lovecraft movie makers might find something of use on here. I am rather guessing that putting me to sleep was not on his agenda. I suppose if you like ambient music and you read Mythos tales, you might like this sort of thing. Slayer, Metallica (old) or even the excellent Nox Arcana are far more appropriate.

2/5

Lol, I got an email from the record company bitching at me for the review. They said I did not appreciate the genre.

I'd reposnd with:

"Nah, I just do not appreciate this crap on a plastic disc that someone will be duped into spending money on. Eat a penis."

He really didn't get the fact that because the work was based on Lovecraft that i compared it to other mythos-inspired stuff. He is demanding I send it to someone who knows the genre...which is laughable in extremis.

I posted a reply giving some of my thoughts.

I am officially going to grab all your reviews from the forum and place them in the review section if you don't mind.

I also have another person who emailed me one (and perhaps will continue with more) which I am going to add.

Let me know!

She has got to be either close to the composer or paid to promote that CD. Otherwise, I don't see how anybody could have any problems with your review. That "music" blows chunks.

Yes; what makes me laugh is that she did not realise that Nox Arcana do "ambient" music as well. Just to make her look even dumber I am going to be placing up a review of Ozric Tentacles.

Thanks.

Wasn't too hard coming up with that review. Declaring that CD to be "good" is akin to pointing at a turd and claiming it's a gold nugget.

I just wonder how many Lovecraft fans have been duped into buying that disc just because of the way it's being promoted.
