Pronunciation of Cthulhu

Post by zeitgeist »

How do you pronounce Cthulhu? I've heard a few different pronunciations over the years. I know there's an official pronunciation ("Lovecraft said that "the first syllable [of Khlul'-hloo is] pronounced gutturally and very thickly. The u is about like that in full; and the first syllable is not unlike klul in sound, hence the h represents the guttural thickness." H. P. Lovecraft, Selected Letters V, pp. 10 – 11.) but I know that that doesn't seem to matter to a lot of people.

I've always pronounced it like "kuh - thoo - loo" and that's how most people I know pronounce it. My fiancé, and some British people I've met, pronounce it like "kuh - too - loo". Just curious as to how you all say it.

I pronounce it the same way you do, as do most people I know.

I pronounce it "kuh - thoo - loo", too. But, of course, there's no correct pronunciation (with human tongues, at least.)
