The Best of Lovecraft

Post by meenween »

Hello everyone,

My user name is meenween and I am a new member to The Temple of Dagon. I only have been reading lovecraft for about 4 months, but in this time have became completly hooked. After reading almost all of his tales besides two classics (Mountains of Madness, and Shadow out of Time) the latter which I will be reading momentarily, I wanted to know what your alls top five tales are. I know ranking is tough and very cliche, however I am obsessed with lists, and wan to know what other "true lovecraft fans" think. This is my first topic and depending on the response, I will posting more. I am especially interested in dissecting lovecraft and discussing different themes, fears, myth, in his stories. So HERE ARE MY TOP FIVE LOVECRAFT TALES P.S. Please respond

Thanks,
meenween

1. The Lurking Fear (Not only a tale that grips you from the begining to the end, but also as the title suggests----gives the reader a "lurking fear" of what will happen)

2. The Color Out of Space (Great horror/sci-fi story of the unknown that makes the reader not fear so much for the doomed family, but for the eyewitness of the events)

3. The Whisperer in Darkness (even though the first two gripped me more--this maybe h.p.'s most complete tale----horror, sci-fi, mythos, mystery)

4. Dreams in the Witch House (very underrated by lovecraft critics---takes the thought of witchcraft into the 4th Dimesion, and offers a very wild and horrific story)

5. Herbert West--Reanimator (The best mad scientist story ever--move over Frankenstein)

Maybe I should have made this top ten lovecraft tales, I want to mention a few Honorable Mentions.

In the Walls Of Eryx
The Rats In The Walls
The Temple
Under The Pyramids/ Horror At RedHook (Historical Horror)

Whisperer in the Darkness is the best, good job for including Walls of Eyrx, no-one seems to like that one except me and you...

Thanks for responding guys. It doesnt seem like there is much activity in the Forums. Yeah In the Walls of Eryx is a badass story. I myself always wondered what life would be like on Venus. I seemed to get such a vivid picture of the scenery while reading this. And it is nice to take a break from the Lovecraft Mythos now and then.

There isn't much activity because there are only 3 of us...well really 2 now, haven't seen JJ post in a while, that post regularly.
Many people like you post about 5 times, get bored, and move on.
That sounds awesome EE. I need to find it then. Not in any of my Lovecraft books.

Nope. The only lovecrafty stuff I've ever read was Clark Ashton Smith's The Treader of the Dust, something about shriveled mummies freaks me out!

I think that shriveled mummies should freak everybody out. But most readers of Lovecraft have already desensitized their brains enough, so stuff like that doesn't bother us....

I don't know. I still find it somewhat disturbing when they show up at the door.
